The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is a membership-led farm worker organization that has been working since 1993 to improve wages and working conditions for Florida farm workers.  The CIW leads the national Campaign for Fair Food, which calls on major buyers of tomatoes to pay one more penny per pound for their tomatoes directly to the workers that picked them, and to establish a worker-developed, implemented and monitored code of conduct in their supply chains.  After having reached agreements with McDonald's, Subway, Taco Bell, Burger King, Whole Foods and Compass Group, the CIW's current campaign focuses on Publix Supermarkets who has yet to agree.  If you cannot attend the meeting and would like more information please contact Meghan at meghan@sfalliance.org

February & March Happy Hour:  The South Tampa Democrats are collecting new and used arts & crafts/school supplies to benefit the students of the Beth-El Mission in Wimauma, Fl.  The migrant families served by the mission are in great need of basic necessities.  Household items such as sheets, towels, and blankets are requested as well as gently used or new clothing.  Especially needed are long sleeved shirts and pants (small-medium sizes) and hats.  Please bring your items to the February or March Happy Hour or send reply email to arrange for your items to be picked up.

Mable's Kids Ministries is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt/Party for needy children on Saturday April 3rd at McFarlane Park from 11-2 p.m.  Donations of baskets, juice boxes, candy, and arts & crafts materials are needed.  Volunteers are needed to help with craft tables and egg hiding.  Please contact Jane Gibbons at 813-785-5560.

Mark your calendar now for Saturday April 17th – when we will perform a Day of Service at America's Second Harvest food bank from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

America's Second Harvest of Tampa Bay is partnered with over 350 charities and churches that distribute this food to hungry people in need throughout west central Florida through their pantry and soup kitchen programs.  Each month they receive over 100 pallets of un-saleable merchandise from area grocery stores. Volunteers are needed to sort these items and that is how we will be assisting them.

Very cool story out of Africa regarding Nelson Mandela I thought I would share: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/02/11/2817298.htm?section=justin
Today, Mandela celebrates 20 years of his release and will reenact that historic walk from the Victor Verster Prison, just outside of Capetown. I'm going to be looking for where this will be broadcasted.

I'm sure all of you are aware, or definitely should be, about the Supreme Court decision of Citizens United v FEC. Elements of the Tillman Act of 1907 and Federal Corrupt Practices Act of 1910 limiting corporate and union contributions to campaigns were overturned in what can only be described as one of the most heinous decision on fair elections.

After a decision like this we, as educated consumers, must be very aware of where our money is going when we spend it. I know most people will swing by Wal~Mart once in a while to pick up $5 of household goods. But where do you buy your clothes (where are they made? Taiwan? The Philippines?) Can you buy items on your shopping list from locally owned business rather than that big chain store? Does the chain store you buy from deny their workers breaks? Deny benefits to employees in same-sex relationships? Support child labor practices?
I purchased the “The Blue Pages” a few years ago. It's a directory of companies rated by their politics and practices. It lists their Party and PAC contributions, as well as their business practices on issues like same-sex benefits or consumer safety. (ISBN: 9781936227273)

Also available is the TIBA (Tampa Independent Business Alliance) Directory. Support these local businesses, and even ask them if they've made any contributions to that homophobic union-hating, Intelligent design-preaching conservative running for the district in which you live. (http://tibatampa.org/ )

What are your thoughts on combating this Supreme Court decision? Or should it even be a concern? Do you think companies will even engage in politicking and why/why not?

See you at R&S, on the 17th!! Call me if you have any questions?

Tim -- 813-532-9846

Northwest Hillsborough Democratic Club Recurring Event

Event Location: Wendy Cartwright's home - 5607 Piney Lane Drive, Tampa 33625

Event Description:

We will meet this Sunday afternoon at 3 PM at Wendy Cartwright's house to continue making election plans for our area.  We participated in an energizing workshop a couple of weeks ago and we don't want to lose our momentum.

Because this meeting will substitute for the Northwest Hillsborough Democratic Club meeting, I've invited a guest speaker to join us.  Her name is Meghan Cohorst and she works with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a Florida farmworker organization that is trying to improve the sweatshop and near-slavery conditions of farmworkers in the state.  The CIW is organizing a FARMWORKER FREEDOM MARCH and rally for the weekend of April 16-18.  Meghan will give us information about the protests being waged against Publix Supermarket for their tomato-buying policies.
